Mac's Cafe was previously known as the Linman Cafe in the early 1930's. It was known to have been in operation at the same time as the Linman Cafe in 1932. Thus, it is likely that the Linman Cafe was purchased; and, Mac's Cafe was simply relocated there.
In March of 1940, H. Tollefson purchased Mac's Cafe from Lee McMahan and took possession of the cafe on March 15, 1940. Mr. Tollefson had been a farmer in the Beresford community for many years. He continued the business under the same name.
On May 19, 1947 Miss E. M. Kingston, and Mr. and Mrs. R. Huston; all of whom were formerly of Climbing Hill, IA; became the new owners of Mac's Cafe of Beresford, SD and took over management from H. Tollefson.
On April 1, 1950, the cafe was purchased from Miss Kingston and Mr. and Mrs. Huston by Mr. and Mrs. P. Barendregt of Jefferson, IA. The Barendregts had formerly operated a cafe in Hawarden, IA called the Central Cafe.
On Halloween of 1969, the grill of Mac's Cafe caught fire; and, the fire quickly spread to the kitchen area. The oven, stove, refridgerator, and a number of other kitchen items were destroyed by the fire. Fortunately, the fire department managed to contain the fire to the kitchen area. The cafe had to closed down until the damage from water and smoke could be repaired.
