Beresford News

This weekly newspaper was Beresford's first newspaper; and, it went into publication in the 1880's. The final issue was published on December 30, 1926. The following week, the Beresford Republic included an announcement on its front page, which stated that the "plant, subscription list and good will" had been sold to H. R. Carpenter and that the Beresford News had been consolidated with the Beresford Republic in response to the financial depression.

Beresford Republic

This weekly newspaper went into publication in 1893 in Elk Point, SD and was originally known as the Union County Republican. Shortly after Beresford's second paper, The Press, was burned out, a man by the name of H. A. Stroud was reported to have moved the Union County Republican to Beresford and placed Alec Rennick in charge. Before 1898, the paper was known as the Union County Republic. However, Alec was reported to have liked "to while away his hours in various forms of amusement," and the paper venture didn't pay.

Then, local Populists took over the paper and put up the money to keep it going; and, Charley Moore was placed in charge. The paper was financially in the red until the fall of 1895, when Harry H. Sturges drove up from Vermillion to assume the debts and to take charge of the newspaper. As the debts worried him, he wired to next editor to come and to bring "all available cash," which ultimately amounted to $350. Eventually Harry Sturges sold out and moved back to Vermillion before finally moving to Charter Oak. The new editor operated the paper successfully for many years. In 1898, the paper was renamed The Beresford Republic; and, it continued under that name until the present day.

In about 1897, the Beresford Republic obtained a two page Cottrell and Babcock press from Chicago, IL. The press was built well before 1870; and, its bolts, screws, and finer parts were made by hand. The machine had survived the great Chicago fire of 1871. The press was used by the Beresford Republic until 1927. On May 26, 1932, Howard C. King used a truck to move the machine from Beresford, SD to Larchwood, IA, where he planned to use the press to start a newspaper in that community.

In June of 1981, the publisher of the Beresford Republic joined with four other newspaper publishers to form a corporation called Quad City Printing, Inc. They jointly purchased a Vangard web offset printing press from Vermillion Plain Talk for the purpose of allowing corporation members to publish their own papers. They also purchased the Centerville Journal building in Centerville, SD to house the press. On July 1, 1981, the press went into operation for the first time to publish the Beresford Republic, the Alcester Union, the Centerville Journal, the Lennox Independent, and the Sioux Valley News.

The Beresford Republic is still in publication today. The paper features local news from the area of Beresford, South Dakota.

Beresonian

The first issue of Beresford High School's newspaper was published as part of the Beresford Republic on December 10, 1931. The first two issues of Volume 1 were published under the title, High School News. The paper offered a free Carnival play ticket to the student who suggested the name that was selected for the paper. H. Blumer was the student who suggested The Beresonian.

The Press

Beresford's second weekly paper was originally published by Chris Wheelock on the second floor of the Bank building. At one point, the heavy printing press fell through the floor and crashed to the ground. The noise was reported to have been heard from the farthest ends of Beresford. Later, the Press was moved to a new location and was reported to have been sold to Charles Sabastian Moore.

Southeast Trumpet

This weekly publication started in 1997. It is still in publication and consists almost entirely of classified advertising. It replaced the long-running Triangle. The earliest issues from 1997 included a television program schedule; but, this feature was discontinued.

Triangle

This weekly publication started in 1977 and consisted almost entirely of classified advertising. The last issues of the publication appeared as recently as 1998. It ceased publication shortly after the introduction of a new but similar publication called the Southeast Trumpet in 1997.
